LIVING LENT IN TIMES OF DEEP SUFFERING: A 5-Week Online Series

A 5-Week Online Series Co-sponsored by New Encounters: Catholics Confronting Racism Pastoral Care of Migrants & Refugees, & the Archdiocese of Philadelphia

“Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me" (Matthew 16:24)

Jesus made it clear to his disciples—and now to us—that the path to life with Him requires suffering with Him and with our sisters and brothers. As we enter Lent this year, it is clear that suffering—both physical deprivation and mental anguish—is widespread in our country, especially for those some view as “other” because of their race, national origin or immigration status. The spiritual wisdom of Catholic tradition in the nations and cultures represented in our Church challenges us all to reject that distorted view of our neighbors, to be transformed in Christ, and to “unleash a torrent of moral energy"-- as Pope Leo has said- to heal racism, division and violence.

To that end, our online Lenten series this year will feature testimonies about the Lenten journey to the Cross from the perspective of local Catholics whose faith was formed in Africa, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. We hope you will join us!
